What does it mean to belong to a space? Is it the land beneath our feet, the waters that surround us, or the invisible borders that shape our movements and identities? Songs of Earth and Sea brings together four films that reflect on the landscapes we inhabit and the fragile relationships we build with them. Rather than presenting the world as fixed or unified, this program approaches it as an agglomeration of lives, territories, and stories, each echoing within a larger collective rhythm. Across these works, land and sea emerge not as passive backdrops, but as living environments where human and nonhuman lives intersect.
This program is curated by the students of the “Film Programming” course given by Nour Ouayda in winter 2026 at IESAV-USJ, Beirut.

In Antépénultième (Daoura) (2015, 14’) by Alain Kantarjian, the camera observes the overlooked harbor of Dora near Beirut, where fishers, migrant workers, refugees, and elderly residents form a transient community on the city’s margins. As urban development encroaches, the film captures both the precarity and resilience of lives sustained in a space on the brink of erasure.
Red In Tooth (2021, 21’) by Dala Nasser follows a dog wandering along the Blue Line in southern Lebanon, turning a militarized border into an ecological fable. Through the animal’s movement, the film reframes territory beyond human politics, while traces of division and control remain ever-present.
In The Street of Death and Other Stories (2017, 23’), Karam Ghossein portrays a suburb near Beirut’s airport where highways, aircraft, and histories of violence shape everyday life. The film evokes a landscape where danger, memory, and survival are inseparable from the terrain.
Finally, How Beautiful is the Sea (2003, 11’) by Sabine El Chamaa unfolds in a post-nuclear setting, following a solitary figure moving through a deserted city toward the shoreline. There, an encounter between two suited survivors transforms the sea into a space of reflection, where catastrophe and the faint possibility of connection coexist.
Together, these films invite us to reconsider the spaces we call home. Moving across borders, coastlines, and neglected urban edges, they reveal how landscapes carry the traces of those who inhabit and traverse them. Songs of Earth and Sea becomes an invitation to listen to the murmurs of the land, the rhythms of the water, and the many voices that shape the spaces we live in.

تهويدة الأرض والبحر
ماذا يعني أن تنتمي إلى مكان؟ هل هي الأرض تحت أقدامنا، أم المياه التي تحيط بنا، أم الحدود غير المرئية التي تشكّل حركاتنا وهوياتنا؟ يجمع «تهويدة الأرض والبحر» أربعة أفلام تتأمّل في الأماكن التي نسكنها والعلاقات الهشّة التي نبنيها معها. لا يُقدَّم العالم هنا بوصفه ثابتاً أو موحَّداً، بل يُقارَب كتجمّع من الحيوات والأراضي والحكايات، تتردّد كلٌّ منها في إيقاع جماعي أشمل. عبر هذه الأعمال، لا تبرز الأرض والبحر خلفيةً صامتة، بل بيئتَين حيَّتَين تتقاطع فيهما الحياة الإنسانية وغير الإنسانية.

في فيلم "الدورة" للمخرج آلان قنطارجان، تلتقط الكاميرا صور ميناء الدوره المهمل بالقرب من بيروت، حيث يشكل الصيادون والعمال الأجانب واللاجئين وكبار السن مجتمعاً عابراً على هامش المدينة. ومع توسع التنمية المدنيّة، يلتقط الفيلم هشاشة الحياة وصمودها في مكان على وشك الزوال.
يحكي فيلم "الأسنان الحمراء" للمخرجة دالا ناصر قصة كلب يتجول على طول «الخط الأزرق» في جنوب لبنان، محولاً الحدود العسكرية إلى حكاية بيئية. ومن خلال تحركات هذا الحيوان، يعيد الفيلم صياغة مفهوم الإقليم بعيداً عن السياسة البشرية، في حين تظل آثار الانقسام والسيطرة حاضرة دائماً.
في فيلم "شارع الموت وقصص أخرى"، يصور كرم غصين ضاحيةً تقع بالقرب من مطار بيروت، حيث تشكل الطرق السريعة والطائرات وتاريخ العنف ملامح الحياة اليومية. ويستحضر الفيلم مشهدًا لا ينفصل فيه الخطر والذاكرة والبقاء عن طبيعة المكان.
أخيرًا، يعرض فيلم "ما احلا البحر" للمخرجة سابين الشمعة أحداثه في بيئة ما بعد كارثة نووية، حيث يتتبع شخصية منعزلة تمشي في مدينة مهجورة باتجاه الشاطئ. وهناك، يؤدي لقاء بين ناجيين يرتديان بدلات واقية إلى تحويل البحر إلى فضاء للتأمل، حيث تتعايش الكارثة مع احتمال ضئيل لإقامة علاقة.
تدعونا هذه الأفلام مجتمعةً إلى إعادة النظر في المساحات التي نسميها وطنًا. فمن خلال التنقل عبر الحدود والسواحل والأطراف المهملة للمدن، تكشف هذه الأفلام كيف تحمل الأرض آثار من يسكنونها ويجوبونها. وهكذا يصبح برنامج «تهويدة الأرض والبحر » دعوةً للاستماع إلى همسات الأرض، وإيقاعات الماء، والأصوات المتعددة التي تشكل الأماكن التي نعيش فيها.
