The ringing phone surprises Salvatore di Vitta, a smart forty year old film-maker. His mother’s voice and these few words: “Alfredo is dead”. It is enough to make his childhood reappear, the Giancaldo village in Sicily, the dusty and white square, the church and the parish cinema, where rules the almighty figure of Alfredo, the projectionist…

Il restauro a risoluzione 4k della versione corta di Nuovo cinema Paradiso è stato realizzato a partire dal negativo camera originale.
Nel corso della storia produttiva del film, il negativo originale fu tagliato per creare la versione corta, oggetto di questo restauro, e solo in un secondo momento riportato alla versione lunga.
Questi successivi interventi di montaggio hanno modificato il negativo originale rendendo necessario il ricorso ad altri elementi, stampati prima dei rimontaggi, per la ricostruzione della versione originale corta. Come riferimento di montaggio della versione corta sono stati utilizzati un internegativo e un positivo d’epoca che sono stati comparati con l’ultima versione del negativo.
Grazie a questa comparazione sono state individuate tutte le differenze tra il negativo rimontato e la versione corta da ricostruire.
In particolare alcune inquadrature nell’ultima versione furono completamente sostituite. Il negativo delle inquadrature estratte dal negativo originale era stato conservato in alcune scatole contenenti altro girato del film ed è stato possibile quindi recuperarlo e reintegrarlo nella versione restaurata.
La fase di correzione colore è stata direttamente supervisionata dal regista Giuseppe Tornatore e dal direttore della fotografia Blasco Giurato. Una copia positiva d’epoca è stata utilizzata come riferimento.
Il suono è stato acquisito e restaurato a partire dal set di magnetici originali con musica ed effetti separati. Anche questa fase è stata seguita direttamente dal regista.

The 4K resolution restoration of the short version of Cinema Paradiso was carried out using the original camera negative.
Over the course of the film's production, the original negative was cut to create the short version, the subject of this restoration, and only later reverted to the long version.
These subsequent editing interventions modified the original negative, making it necessary to use other elements, printed before the reassembly, to reconstruct the original short version. A vintage internegative and positive were used as reference for editing the short version, and compared them with the latest version of the negative.
This comparison identified all the differences between the reassembled negative and the short version to be reconstructed.
In particular, some shots in the latest version were completely replaced. The negative of the shots extracted from the original negative had been stored in boxes containing other film footage and was therefore recovered and reintegrated into the restored version.
The color correction phase was directly supervised by director Giuseppe Tornatore and director of photography Blasco Giurato. A vintage positive print was used as a reference.
The sound was acquired and restored from the original magnetic tape set, with separate music and effects. This phase was also supervised directly by the director.
