Before the Image: Labor, Archives, and the Infrastructure of Vision

In 2021, the Palestine Film Institute received a collection of film clips from the Israeli military archive, provided by an Israeli researcher. The collection consists of fragmented, mostly silent, and untitled footage digitized from 16mm film that has repeatedly appeared, without proper attribution or identification, in various Israeli and Western films as a representation of “Arabs.” These materials raise critical questions about archiving and power, the archivist’s ability to enable disappearance through the archive’s technical manipulation, and the possibility of constructing critical narratives from fragmentary historical remains.
