In Tuscany, at the end of World War II, Mara meets Bube, a former resistance fighter. They fall in love, but Bube is forced to flee the country after being accused of a political assassination. Mara remains in Italy, waiting for him, but meets Stefano, who asks her to marry him. She is on the verge of accepting—resigned to the idea that she will never see Bube again—when she suddenly hears from him.

En Toscane, à la fin de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, Mara rencontre Bube, un ancien résistant. Ils tombent amoureux mais Bube est obligé de fuir le pays car il est accusé d’un assassinat politique. Mara reste en Italie à l’attendre, mais elle rencontre Stefano qui lui demande de l’épouser. Elle est sur le point d’accepter, résignée de revoir un jour Bube, quand elle reçoit subitement de ses nouvelles.
