This lecture screening highlights two titles from a collection of films discovered in a Berlin antique shop in 2019.
Produced in Indonesia between the late 1950s and the early 1990s, the films range from government public relations projects to documentation of Indonesian diplomatic corps activities in Germany.
The films are selected for presentation by Lisabona Rahman, who has been working with archival film from Indonesia since 2006. The two titles represent different eras in Indonesian political history: THE ISLAND OF BURU is a propaganda piece by the military regime justifying Indonesia’s penal colony for communist political prisoners, while INDONESIEN TANZT compiles short dance films, an effort to introduce Indonesian arts abroad by the first regime of the newly independent nation. Each screening will be preceded by readings of texts written by individuals in or related to the film.

About the Speaker:
Lisabona Rahman studied moving image preservation and presentation in Amsterdam. In 2014 she joined fellow artists in creating Lab Labalaba artist-run hand processing laboratory based in Jakarta. She conducts performative lectures involving stories deriving from filmic artefacts. Lisabona also has been creating archival film screening programs for festivals, archives and galleries. Her works were created and shown with the support of different institutions such as the Arsenal Institut in Berlin, rubanah underground hub Jakarta, Thai Film Archive Bangkok and Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam. Since 2018 she also has been creating works for knowledge sharing activities related to celluloid films, which have taken place in different cities such as Berlin, Cairo and Jakarta.

تُسلِّط هذه المحاضرة الضوء على فيلمَين من مجموعة أفلام اكتُشِفت في متجر تحف قديمة في برلين في عام 2019. والأفلام هذه أُنتِجت في إندونيسيا بين أواخر الخمسينيات وأوائل التسعينيات، وتتراوح موضوعاتها من مشاريع العلاقات العامة الحكومية إلى توثيق أنشطة السلك الدبلوماسي الإندونيسي في ألمانيا.
تم اختيار الفيلمَين للعرض من قبل ليزابونا رحمن التي تعمل في مجال الأفلام الأرشيفية الإندونيسية منذ عام 2006. يُمثِّل هذان الفيلمان حقبتَين مختلفتَين من التاريخ السياسي الإندونيسي: "جزيرة بورو" هو فيلم بروباغندا أنتجه نظام الحكم العسكري لتبرير وجود سجن في الجزيرة مخصّص للسجناء السياسيين الشيوعيين؛ أمّا فيلم "الرقص الإندونيسي"، فهو تجميعٌ لأفلام رقص قصيرة، ويندرج ضمن جهود النظام الجديد للدولة المستقلّة حديثاً للتعريف بالفنون الإندونيسية في الخارج. ستسبق كلّ عرض قراءاتُ نصوصٍ كتبها أفراد يظهرون في أحد الفيلمَين أو ذو علاقة بأحدهما.
