Bid Me Farewell tells the story of Umm Rami, a compassionate mourner in the city of Suwayda, Syria, who helps the families of the deceased overcome their grief through her handed down poems about loss. The film follows Umm Rami's daily routine as she wakes up early in the morning to prepare herself for a long day of funerals, reciting songs and sharing stories of lamentations that bring solace to the bereaved. As the film unfolds, we learn about Umm Rami's own personal losses and how they inform her work as a professional mourner. Through her eyes, we witness the mourning ritual of the Druze sect and how it aids in the healing process after loss and lamentation. In parallel with this specific cultural context, the film highlights the universal human experience of grief, transcending cultural boundaries. As Umm Rami returns home at the end of the day, exhausted but fulfilled, the film ends with one message; all we have in the face of mortality is one another.
