Denmark 1913. Anton’s top priority is to complete his training as a cavalry officer. During a training he orders his platoon to help Baron von Løvenskjold and finds himself invited to a ball where he meets the Baron’s beautiful daughter Edith who has been in an accident and ended up in a wheelchair. Anton feels a growing compassion towards Edith, and as the two spend more time together he grows fond of her. However, he can’t figure out whether his feelings are of pity or true love, and in his attempt at doing the right thing he gets ever more entangled in promises, lies, and responsibility towards the Løvenskjold family and to Edith.

Danemark, 1913. La priorité absolue d’Anton est de terminer sa formation d’officier de cavalerie. Lors d’un entraînement, il ordonne à son peloton d’aider le baron von Løvenskjold. Il est alors invité à un bal où il rencontre la belle fille du baron, Edith, qui, à la suite d’un accident, s’est retrouvée clouée dans un fauteuil roulant. Anton ressent une compassion croissante envers Edith et, au fur et à mesure que les deux jeunes gens passent plus de temps ensemble, il s’attache à elle. Cependant, il n’arrive pas à identifier la nature de ses sentiments. Serait-ce de la pitié ou le véritable amour ? Dans sa tentative de bien faire les choses, il s’enlise de plus en plus dans des promesses, des mensonges et une grande responsabilité envers la famille Løvenskjold et Edith.
