As the debate rages on in Beirut about the proper strategy to deal with the ongoing garbage crisis, we decided to take a closer, scientific look at the cause of the heated debate: Incinerators.

As the Lebanese government is planning to acquire an incinerator or maybe two to deal with the waste issue, we decided to go to Denmark, where the government plans to acquire the incinerators and ask questions which would render the debate clearer and hopefully more scientific.

The Danes gave us full transparent access to their facility, they answered all our questions: How do you manage this facility without polluting? what are the parameters you follow? what do you do with the fly ash? with the bottom ash? Do you incinerate recyclable materials? what kind of waste do you incinerate? do you apply thermal degradation or just plain direct incineration? We took all our concerns and traveled to Denmark to find proper and clear answers... And most importantly, for us the ultimate question was: Is incineration feasible in Beirut?

بينما تخطط الحكومة اللبنانية لشراء محرقة أو ربما محرقتين للتعامل مع مشكلة النفايات، قررنا التوجه إلى الدنمارك، حيث تعتزم الحكومة استيراد المحارق منها، لطرح الأسئلة التي قد تجعل النقاش أكثر وضوحًا وعلمية.

منحنا الدنماركيون وصولًا شفافًا وكاملاً إلى منشآتهم، وأجابوا على جميع أسئلتنا: كيف تديرون هذه المنشأة دون تلويث البيئة؟ ما هي المعايير التي تتبعونها؟ ماذا تفعلون بالرماد المتطاير؟ وبالرماد المتبقي في القاع؟ هل تحرقون المواد القابلة لإعادة التدوير؟ ما نوع النفايات التي تحرقونها؟ هل تطبقون التحلل الحراري أم تحرقون النفايات مباشرة؟ حملنا كل مخاوفنا وسافرنا إلى الدنمارك للحصول على إجابات واضحة ودقيقة... والأهم من ذلك، كان السؤال الأكبر بالنسبة لنا: هل إعتماد تقنية الحرق ممكن في بيروت؟
