For LA ZERDA ET LES CHANTS DE L'OUBLI Algerian writer Assia Djebar changed professions in order to recapitulate the colonialization of the Maghreb using French newsreels. The film employs montage to search for the truth in these "images of a killing gaze", a truth which they pointedly do not show: the "resistance behind the mask". The soundtrack brings together multi-vocal chants and experimental music to form a furious swan song to colonial violence.
The film will be screened with Arabic subtitles that were produced in the framework of The World is Strange project by Philip Rizk and Basma al-Sharif. The screening will be presented by Philip Rizk.
لكي تصوّر فيلم "الزردة وأغاني النسيان"، غيّرت الكاتبة الجزائرية آسيا جبّار مهنتها لكي تعيد سرد قصة استعمار المغرب العربي باستخدام شرائط إخبارية فرنسية. ويوظّف الفيلم تقنية المونتاج بحثًا عن الحقيقة الكامنة في "صور النظرة القاتلة"، إلا أن هذه الصور تتعمد عدم إظهار تلك الحقيقة: "المقاومة خلف القناع". ويحتوي الشريط الصوتي للفيلم على مقاطع غنائية ذات أصوات متعددة وموسيقى تجريبية تشكّل عاصفةً موسيقية بوجه العنف الاستعماري.

About Assia Djebar
Her work as a novelist has made Assia Djebar one of the most familiar and widely read Arabic writers of her generation. As part of her engagement for Algerian independence, she made two films around the end of the 1970s – LA NOUBA DES FEMMES DU MONT CHENOUA (1979) and LA ZERDA ET LES CHANTS DE L’OUBLI (1982) – which are highly significant in the context of anti-colonialist historiography, even if they have received relatively little attention. For LA ZERDA ET LES CHANTS DE L’OUBLI Assia Djebar and her co-author Malek Alloula spent half a year in the film archives of Pathé and Gaumont viewing films and footage that French documentary filmmakers had shot during the colonial period. By means of montage, these “images of a killing gaze” are in a certain sense scoured for the truth that they precisely do not show, for the resistance that had withdrawn “behind the mask.” This merciless inspection is mixed with a soundtrack on which militant poetry, recitative, and experimental music are linked together into a swansong to colonial power.
بفضل عملها الروائي، أصبحت آسيا جبار واحدةً من أكثر كاتبات جيلها العربي حضورًا وقراءةً. وفي إطار التزامها بقضية استقلال الجزائر، أنجزت آسيا في أواخر سبعينيات القرن العشرين فيلمين، أولهما "نوبة نساء جبل شنوة (1979)" والثاني "الزردة وأغاني النسيان (1982)". ولهذين الفيلمين أهمية كبيرة في مجال الأعمال التأريخية المناهضة للاستعمار، وإن لم يحظيا إلا باهتمامٍ محدود نسبيًا.
وفي فيلم "الزردة وأغاني النسيان"، أمضت آسيا جبار مع شريكها في التأليف مالك علولة نحو نصف عام يبحثان في أرشيف پاتيه وغومون، يشاهدان أفلامًا وثائقية فرنسية تم تصويرها خلال الحقبة الاستعمارية. ومن خلال المونتاج، تُفتَّش "صور النظرة القاتلة" بلا هوادة عن الحقيقة التي لا تُظهرها أصلًا، أي المقاومة التي انسحبت "خلف القناع". ويترافق هذا الفحص القاسي مع شريطٍ صوتي تتشابك فيه قصائد نضالية وموسيقى تجريبية وإنشادية، لتكوّن نشيد نضالي أخير في وجه سلطة الاستعمار.
