One Image, Two Acts unravels the multifaceted and intertwined systems of oil infrastructures spanned and accumulated across unlikely geographies and material temporalities. Examining the photographic and film archives of British Petroleum (BP) during its operations in Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait, this film traces the visual and media infrastructures through which oil has operated as an agent of power in the colonial episteme. It unpacks BP’s widespread construction of cinemas in the oil towns of South-Western Iran and follows the transformation of this emergent image economy in contouring the nationalization movement and the anti-colonial cinema between 1950-1980 in Iran.
يحلل فيلم "صورة واحدة، فعلَان" الأنظمة المتعددة والمتداخلة التي تلعب دورًا في بناء شبكات استخراج النفط الممتدة عبر جغرافيات غير متوقعة وزمنيات مادية مختلفة. ويفحص الفيلم الأرشيف الفوتوغرافي والسينمائي لشركة بريتيش بتروليوم (BP) خلال عملياتها التنقيبية في إيران والعراق والكويت، ويتتبع البنى التحتية البصرية والإعلامية التي اشتغلت عبرها شركات النفط كأداة للسيطرة ضمن المنظومة المعرفية الاستعمارية، كما يكشف عن مشاريع كبيرة قامت بها شركة BP في المدن النفطية في جنوب غرب إيران لبناء قاعات سينما، ويتابع تحوّل هذا الاقتصاد الصوري الناشئ في رسم معالم حركة التأميم والسينما المناهضة للاستعمار بين عامي 1950 و1980 في إيران.
About Sanaz Sohrabi
Sanaz Sohrabi is an artist, researcher of visual culture, and an Assistant Professor in the department of Communication and Media Studies at Concordia University, Montréal. Sohrabi works with essay film and installation as her means of research to explore the relationship between the political economy of photography, archival technologies, and visual history of resource extraction and postcolonial sovereignty in Iran. Sohrabi’s works have been shown widely in museums and festivals, including: Berlinale Forum Expanded, International Film Festival Rotterdam, IndieLisboa,Valdivia International Film Festival Chile, Sheffield Doc/Fest, DocLisboa, Block Museum Chicago, Videonale Bonn, Momenta Biennial 2025, Ljubljana Biennial 2023, 2024 Asian Art Biennial, SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin, and VOX Centre de l'image contemporaine, Montréal.
