“Karaoke” begins as a story about childhood rivalries and a mother’s innocent mistake, causing pre-pubescent dreams of becoming a child star to be devastated and crushed – silently and without incident. Until one day, when those feelings of resentment suddenly rise back to the surface upon watching a wandering VHS tape, on which the scene of a star-studded concert takes place. Alongside this grainy colorful footage, the details of that dreaded day begin to reveal themselves, while the hips of a belly dancer shakes, or an angelic voice woos an applauding audience. Gradually, the narrative transforms from an adorable episode from infancy, to a deeply personal and tragic portrayal of memory, loss, and the towering figure that is the mother.

يبدأ فيلم «كاراوكي» كقصة عن صراعات طفولية وخطأ غير مقصود ارتكبته أم، أدى إلى تحطيم أحلام ابنها البريئة في أن يصبح نجمًا في سنّه الصغيرة، تحطيمًا صامتًا وأليمًا. وفي يوم من الأيام، تعود تلك المشاعر المكبوتة فجأةً عندما يعثر على شريط VHS عفى عليه الزمن، يظهر فيه مشهد لحفل موسيقي مليء بالنجوم. عند مشاهدة هذه اللقطات الملونة والقديمة، تتّضح تفاصيل ذلك اليوم الرهيب شيئًا فشيئًا، إذ يرى الرقّاصة على المسرح بخصرها الهزّاز، ويسمع صوتًا ملائكيًا يليه تصفيق الجمهور. مع مرور الوقت، تتحول السردية من صورة جميلة من الطفولة المبكرة إلى تصوير شخصي عميق ومأساوي للذاكرة والفقدان وللهيبة الطاغية التي تمثلها الأم.

About Raed Yassin
Raed Yassin (born 1979, Beirut) is an artist and musician. He graduated from the theater department at the Institute of Fine Arts in Beirut in 2003, and since then has developed his conceptual practice through multiple mediums such as video, sound, photography, text, sculpture and performance. Yassin’s work often originates from an examination of his personal narratives and their position within a collective history, through the lens of consumer culture and mass production. He was a resident artist at De Ateliers, Amsterdam (2008-2010), the Delfina Foundation, London (2010 & 2014), Akademie der Künste der Welt, Cologne (2015), and is a recipient of the Abraaj Group Art Prize (2012). As a musician, he is one of the organizers of the Irtijal Festival for Experimental Music (Beirut), and has released several solo music albums, as well as part of groups such as “A” Trio and PRAED. In 2009, he founded his independent music label Annihaya. Raed currently lives between Berlin and Beirut.
رائد ياسين (مواليد 1979، بيروت) فنان وموسيقي. تخرّج من قسم المسرح في معهد الفنون الجميلة في بيروت عام 2003، ومنذ ذلك الحين طوّر ممارسته المفاهيمية عبر وسائط متعددة مثل الفيديو والصوت والتصوير الفوتوغرافي والنص والنحت والأداء. غالبًا ما تنطلق أعمال ياسين بعد مراجعة سردياته الشخصية وموقعها ضمن التاريخ الجماعي، عبر عدسة ثقافة الاستهلاك والإنتاج بالجملة. كان فنانًا مقيمًا في مدرسة De Ateliers الفنية في أمستردام (2008–2010)، ومؤسسة Delfina في لندن (2010 و2014)، وأكاديمية Künste der Welt في كولونيا (2015)، وهو حاصل على جائزة مجموعة أبراج للفنون (2012). أما بالنسبة لحياته الموسيقية، فهو أيضًا من منظّمي مهرجان "ارتجال" للموسيقى التجريبية في بيروت، كما أصدر عدة ألبومات موسيقية منفردة، إضافةً إلى مشاركته في فرق مثل “A” Trio الارتجالية وPRAED. في عام 2009، أسّس شركة الإنتاج الموسيقي المستقلة "النهاية". يعيش رائد حاليًا بين برلين وبيروت.
